When Teachers Talk Politics Online: The Dark Side of Online Spaces for Teacher Professional Learning

Social media spaces have been conceptualized as affinity spaces for educators. Most studies provide optimistic accounts of teacher professional learning on social media and researchers have analyzed teachers' use of mainstream platforms. But what happens on the more partisan places where teachers may gather online? 

Join Dan Krutka and Spencer Greenhalgh to discuss their recently published research on a partisan US teacher group on an alternative platform. They found that the initial efforts to focus on teaching and learning issues quickly devolved into talk that valorized in-group identification and villainized an out-group. Learn about the characteristics of affinity spaces that can be detrimental to teacher professional learning.
