Reflecting on Generative AI & Your Work Via Poetry as Nonlinear Ideation

Reflective thinking’s relationship to learning is a central part of educational theory and practice. While the flood of rhetorical calls to do something with or about generative AI has dominated many professional and personal conversations, time to reflect on our work and what generative AI means in that work is vital to many educators. In this interactive session, we will reflect on how we balance addressing the impact of generative AI on our work as digital and media literacy educators and on student learning with our values and purpose via poetry. Attendees will practice experimenting with poetry as a method of nonlinear reflection and ideation and have the opportunity to spend time with their own thoughts and share with each other. This technique builds directly on the work of Sarah Kortemeier and her presentation “The Poetics of the Question: Using Poetry to Teach Research Skills” at The Innovative Library Classroom conference in 2018. Note: while we will reflect on generative AI, we will not be using or applying it directly.

Kodi Saylor (she/her) is the Instruction Program Lead Librarian at Auraria Library serving University of Colorado Denver, Mentropolitan State University of Denver and Community Colleges of Denver. Her work as a teaching librarian centers around supporting students and encouraging their curiosity. In her everyday life, Kodi gardens and quilts.
