Digital Literacy & Media Responsibility - Brazil Leadership Program

The Media Education Lab was delighted to host a day-long event on Digital Literacy and Media Responsibility for the International Visitor Leadership Program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department. A dozen distinguished journalists and media and education leaders from BRAZIL will participate in the event. 

DATE: Tuesday, December 4, 2018

TIME: 10 AM - 4 PM

LOCATION: URI Providence Campus, Room 260

The Department of State has outlined the following specific objectives for the project:

 

  • Explore the professional responsibility and resources to ensure accurate reporting in an increasingly complex digital media environment;

  • Explore the importance of, and sharpen their skills for, investigative journalism, fact‑checking, and myth‑busting, as well as on the critical role and responsibility of journalists in a democratic system;

  • Examine educational models that develop media literacy in schools in the United States, at the primary, secondary and higher education levels;

  • Review legislation and legislative initiatives at the local and state level that promote media literacy curricula in public schools; and

  • Examine activities that encourage greater public awareness of the threats posed by disinformation, and the roles and impact of government bodies, NGOs, academia, the information technology industry, and the media have in countering disinformation

KEY IDEAS:

The Media Education Lab supports all six essential components needed for media literacy to advance at the national level: 

1. Curriculum resources and materials

2. Teacher education and professional development

3. Professional network and membership organization

4. Research community exploring implementation and effectiveness 

5. Journalists and media professionals to amplify visibility

6. Supportive community climate including parents, policymakers and general public
